Writing Tips for Beginners

Becoming a successful writer takes a lot of skill and practice, but that doesn’t mean writing needs to be difficult. For some, effective writing is a talent that comes naturally. For others, it takes a little more to hone and perfect their writing style.

‌Writing for Beginners

‌Jumpstarting your writing career can be a daunting task. You are faced with many obstacles, and staying motivated can be challenging.

‌However, starting your writing career doesn’t have to be hard. The key is to stay focused and have confidence in yourself.

‌Writing Tips

‌To be successful in the writing industry, you will need to constantly fine-tune your writing skills. As a novice writer, you likely already possess some excellent ones.

‌As you begin your writing journey, it will be important to continue to grow those skills. To help you out, we’ve compiled a few writing tips for beginners.

‌Less is More

You’re not writing a five-paragraph paper for your English teacher. Keep your writing to the point and avoid irrelevant information.

‌Long, drawn-out sentences and paragraphs can lose the reader’s attention. It’s okay and increases readability for paragraphs to be one or two sentences.

‌Separate Dialogue from Narrative

‌Dialogue and narratives have their own set of rules. You will always start a new paragraph for dialogue and narratives.

When characters are having a conversation, double-space the dialogue and start a new paragraph each time you change which character is speaking.

‌Use Correct Punctuation

‌Always double-check your punctuation and review the rules for any punctuation you don’t use often. Readers will lose confidence in you if your work has too many punctuation errors.

‌Additionally, try experimenting with a variety of punctuation to help develop your writing style. For example, if you need to convey a lot of information with a limited word count, try using a bulleted list. Also, don’t be afraid of the semi-colon; it can be a great ally if used properly.

‌Use Proper Capitalization

Using correct capitalization may seem like a basic skill. However, it can be easy to forget a few capitalization rules when your fingers are flying across the keyboard.

Some instances would include:

  • Historical eras – Industrial Revolution, Dark Ages, Victorian Era
  • The first letter in quotation marks, but not after an attribution
  • Family relationships when they’re paired with a name — Aunt Jami, Grandma Frances, Uncle Bob
  • Company names and trademarks — for stylistic purposes, a company may choose not to capitalize the first letter — for example, iPad
  • Landmarks — Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Rushmore
  • Professional titles when paired with a name — Assistant Manager Kevin, Senator Smith.
  • Most words in titles
